Ecologist
Employment: Permanent
Salary: Circa of £45,000 per annum
The Opportunity:
A specialist rail and infrastructure business is looking for an experienced Ecologist to support the delivery of projects while protecting and enhancing the natural environment.
You will provide expert ecological advice across rail infrastructure projects, from feasibility and design through to construction and maintenance. The role will involve ecological surveys, environmental assessments, mitigation planning, biodiversity initiatives and ensuring compliance with UK legislation and client requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake protected species, habitat and vegetation surveys.
- Complete ecological impact assessments and identify environmental risks.
- Prepare ecological reports, constraints plans and mitigation strategies.
- Provide ecological advice throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support ecological licences, permits and environmental consents.
- Ensure projects comply with UK environmental legislation and client requirements.
- Develop and support biodiversity enhancement and habitat restoration schemes.
- Monitor habitats and protected species during project delivery.
- Contribute to environmental audits, inspections and KPI reporting.
- Liaise with clients, Network Rail, regulators, local authorities and other stakeholders.
- Deliver ecological toolbox talks and environmental awareness sessions.
- Support Environmental Management Plans and wider HSQE activities.
Requirements:
- Degree or equivalent in Ecology, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
- Proven experience undertaking ecological surveys and environmental assessments.
- Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation and ecological best practice.
- Experience producing technical ecological reports and mitigation strategies.
- Excellent communication, report-writing and organisational skills.
- Able to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary project teams.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across the UK.
Desirable: CIEEM membership, protected species licences, rail/construction/infrastructure experience, Network Rail experience, PTS, GIS experience, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), invasive species management and EIA experience.
