Our client is a well-established manufacturing business seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Manager to lead its mechanical design and product development function.
This is an excellent opportunity for a senior engineering professional to combine technical leadership, people management, and product development responsibilities within a growing and innovative organisation.
Working closely with senior management and cross-functional teams, you will play a key role in developing new products, improving existing designs, and driving engineering excellence across the business.
The Role
As Mechanical Design Manager, you will lead a team of Development Engineers and Design Engineers while overseeing the design, development, and continuous improvement of a diverse product portfolio.
You will be responsible for managing projects from concept through to manufacture, ensuring products meet customer requirements, industry standards, and commercial objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop the mechanical design team.
- Manage the design and development of new products from concept through to production.
- Identify opportunities to improve existing products in terms of performance, quality, manufacturability, and cost.
- Work closely with customers, sales teams, and internal stakeholders to develop innovative product solutions.
- Manage multiple engineering projects, ensuring delivery within agreed timescales and budgets.
- Review and approve engineering calculations, specifications, drawings, and technical documentation.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards, and quality requirements.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and electrical engineering teams to deliver practical and cost-effective designs.
- Support technical enquiries, customer projects, and sales activities where required.
- Monitor emerging technologies, materials, and engineering developments.
- Manage departmental resources, priorities, and budgets.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have a strong mechanical engineering background combined with proven leadership experience within a manufacturing or product development environment.
Essential Requirements
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Proven experience in a senior design engineering, engineering management, or product development role.
- Experience leading and developing engineering teams.
- Strong project management and product development experience.
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes and Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles.
- Ability to balance technical requirements with commercial objectives.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience producing and reviewing engineering calculations and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of quality management systems and engineering standards.
Desirable Requirements
- Membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
- Experience using SAP or similar ERP systems.
- Knowledge of CAD software, simulation, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
